Mandolin lesson #1 : Trollrikepolska

This is the first in a series of posts where I will share details, tab and recordings of some of my favourite tunes to play on the mandolin. These mini-lessons will help you build up a repertoire of tunes that (I hope) are challenging but fun to play. This first lesson teaches the Swedish tune Trollrikepolska.

If you would like to be notified when I add new lessons, you can follow me on Facebook and Twitter.

About the tune

Trollrikepolska – or The Troll Kingdom Polska – is a nyckelharpa tune written by Eric Sahlström. It has 3 parts and is in the key of F major.

I first heard this tune on the recording Sunny Side Up by Sandra Wong and Dominick Leslie (pictured right). This album is a delightful collection of American and European folk tunes played on bluegrass instrumentation alongside nyckelharpa, and it’s highly recommended for anyone looking for some obscure tunes to learn on the mandolin.

Trollrikepolska has a fairly simple melody, but it’s made somewhat challenging by quirky timing and a slightly awkward key.
